A Mosaic of Kowloon: Photos of Heritage (12 December 2014 – 25 February 2015)

Looming skyscrapers fill our view as we walk through the streets and alleys of Kowloon. Yet this district houses far more than just a bland acceptance of increasing commercialism. It is home to a concrete labyrinth of wonders – one where you can find ancient Eastern Han tomb, localities deposited with the Song and Yuan cultural remains, Qing temples, former colonial military barracks and ‘tong lau’, or Chinese-style tenements, dating from before the Second World War. Many of these heritage sites still fulfil their original functions and reflect the relationships they continue to enjoy with the communities in which they stand, while also bearing witness to the changes these areas have undergone.

Based on archives of the Antiquities and Monuments Office and of local and British museums, libraries and records offices, the exhibition ‘A Mosaic of Kowloon’ sets out to explore the historical background and functions of the archaeological sites and historic buildings of Kowloon and the transitions they have experienced during the development of this bustling district.
