Architecture, as a means to house these cultural practices, should be local and authentic; among those permanent structures of ancestral halls and temples, the temporary bamboo theatres are constructed for festive celebrations and are uniquely “Hong Kong”. The ephemeral nature of these bamboo structures is stretching our interpretation of built heritage, where its historical values are not measured against the age of material presences but rather on the artistic values with its evolving craftsmanship and its close relevance to the development of Cantonese Opera. The conservation of this architectural craftsmanship as well as further exploration of its potential in spatial expressions will add new dimensions to our understanding on how to keep our heritage alive in the future.
This exhibition is organised by the Commissioner for Heritage’s Office, Development Bureau and co-organised by the Antiquities and Monuments Office. The School of Architecture, The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the curatorial team of the exhibition.
