Situated in the east of Hong Kong, Tai Po District is divided into two parts, Tai Po and Sai Kung North. Being the second largest administrative district in Hong Kong, it grew from a spartan village into an important market town and, following rapid development in more recent years, into a sizeable new town. A number of distinctive historic buildings remain in Tai Po District today, while many aspects of the traditional culture and lifestyle of the local population also continue to be practised.
The exhibition sets out to introduce the unique declared monuments and historic buildings in Tai Po through a display of more than 60 valuable unearthed relics, historic architectural components and decorative features, couplets, artefacts, historical records and photographs, accompanied by screenings of a series of video programmes introducing the monuments in Tai Po. Featuring four major themes – “Trade and Transport”, “Ancestral Halls and Walled Villages”, “Temples and Communities” and “Administration in the New Territories” – the exhibition aims to reveal the rich cultural connections and artistic values inherent in the district’s archaeological remains and historic buildings. It will provide visitors with a greater insight into and appreciation of the diversity of Hong Kong’s heritage as well as the importance of heritage conservation.
