Mount Austin Road
Gate Lodge was originally the gatekeeper’s lodge of Mountain Lodge, the governor’s summer residence on the Peak. It was built between 1900 and 1902 as part of the reconstruction of the residence following its destruction in 1897. The design for the main lodge, commissioned from architects Palmer & Turner, was inspired by Scottish Baronial architecture, but for no obvious reason Gate Lodge was constructed in a Neo-classical style. Mountain Lodge was demolished in 1946. Gate Lodge remains, however, and was declared a monument in 1995.
