Garden Road Peak Tram Lower Terminus

Opened in 1888, the Peak Tram is the oldest form of machine-driven transport in Hong Kong. Running from Central to the Peak in about six minutes, the tramway covers a distance of about 1,278 m encompassing six stops. Its highest point is 396 m above sea level and it has a track gradient of 25.7 degrees. The tram first used a coal-powered steam engine and could carry just 30 passengers. The steam engine was replaced by electric motors in 1926. The system was computerised in 1989, and the passenger capacity has now been increased to 210 after the upgrade project completed in 2022. The old terminus on Garden Road was rebuilt several times before the present one was established under St. John’s Building in the early 1980s.
