The District Office (North) was erected around 1907 and was the earliest seat of the civil administration of the New Territories after its lease to the British. Government administration and land registration for the northern part of the New Territories were carried out in this building. It housed a Magistrate’s Court until 1961. The building retired as a District Office in 1983. From 1998 to 2000, it was allocated to the Environmental Protection Department as its Tai Po Branch Office. Since 2002, it has been the Law Ting Pong Scout Centre, New Territories East Region of the Scout of Hong Kong.
The District Office (North) is a typical colonial-style structure in the early 20th century. Finished in fine red bricks, with open verandahs and brick arches along its east and west elevations, it is a stately and elegant building. It has not been significantly altered. The antique fireplaces in the rooms are still well-preserved, which helps bring out the historical character of the building.
Old District Office (North) was declared a monument in 1981.
