The former Victoria Prison Compound was expanded several times at different periods since the 1840s. After World War II, it served as a remand prison, and later housed Victoria Immigration Centre. The prison began to admit illegal immigrants and Vietnamese boat people in the early 1980s and decommissioned in 2006. Victoria Prison Compound was declared a monument in 1995, and revitalised as ‘Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts’ in 2018.
