Main Building of The University of Hong Kong

Designed by architectural firm Leigh & Orange and constructed between 1910 and 1912 with funds donated by a Parsi businessman Sir Hormusjee Nawrojee Mody, the Main Building is the oldest structure on the campus of The University of Hong Kong. Built of red brick and granite in the Post-Renaissance style, it is surmounted by a central clock tower built in 1930 and four turrets. Dr Sun Yat-sen famously delivered a speech in the university in 1923. Further extensions were made in 1952 and 1958 respectively. Originally home to classrooms and laboratories of the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering, it then housed various departments of the Faculty of Arts until April 2012. The exterior was declared a monument in 1984. (A memorial plaque can be found on Bonham Road)
