Main Building of The University of Hong Kong

Designed by architectural firm Leigh & Orange and constructed between 1910 and 1912 with funds donated by a Parsi businessman Sir Hormusjee Naorojee Mody, the Main Building is the oldest structure on the main campus of The University of Hong Kong built of red bricks and granite. A central clock tower was erected in 1930 and featured pairs of turrets at both ends of the principal façade. Further extensions were made in 1952 and 1958 respectively. Originally home to classrooms and laboratories of the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering, it then housed various departments of the Faculty of Arts until April 2012. The central Great Hall is named after Loke Yew, a benefactor of the university in its early years. The exterior of the building was declared a monument in 1984.
