8–9 Tai Pak Terrace
Inspired by Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, Fok Hing Tong, the Hong Kong Society for the Promotion of Virtue, was set up in 1924 on the fourth floor of 6-7 Tai Pak Terrace to promote the study and practice of ethics and virtues. It bought the neighbouring house at 8-9 as permanent premises in 1927. These five-storey tenement houses are typical of the Chinese housing that was prevalent in the district in the early 20th century: each floor has a balcony enclosed with intricate iron railings, where the central part is articulated with a slightly convex curve, and the ground floor is usually rented out for commercial use to earn income.
